The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes derives from five-year-old vines, but you'd hardly know it. Exhibiting aromas of white flowers, pear, toasted nuts and subtle reduction, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and vibrant, with a fleshy core of fruit and a precise finish. I've wanted to visit Domaine Marc Morey for several years, as this discreet Chassagne-Montrachet has long produced excellent wines that fly somewhat under the radar. Its origins go back to great-grandfather Fernand Morey, whose whites and reds I've adored and who presided over winemaking between 1919 and around 1950. The eponymous Marc Morey was his son, who ran the domaine for the second half of the twentieth century. Today, it's Sabine Mollard who presides, having joined the family estate in 2003. Fruit is gently crushed and pressed pneumatically, with a short and comparatively static cycle, followed by debourbage overnight at 12 degrees centigrade and the beginning of alcoholic fermentation in tank before barreling down. Working with a wide variety of coopers (including Chassin and François Frères), Sabine stirs the lees until the end of malolactic fermentation. Regional appellations see nine months in barrel, with the rest racked to tank just before harvest and bottled, under natural cork, in early spring.(WK)

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes 1er Cru, which was more or less ready to be bottled, has an attractive bouquet with lemon curd, crushed stone and light praline scents rendering very seductive aromatics. The 30% new oak is very well integrated. The palate is well-balanced with fine weight and tension. Quite edgy, veins of ginger come through on the finish, and there is a conspicuously persistent aftertaste. Very classy.(NM)

Note: from a .80 ha holding in Les Bondues. This is the first wine to display any significant reduction and here it's enough to push the underlying fruit to the background. By contrast there is both good freshness and verve suffusing the caressing and seductive medium-bodied flavors that brim with sappy dry extract before culminating in a sappy bitter citrus-tinged finale. This generously proportioned effort has the legs to repay mid-term keeping up to a decade yet is sufficiently pliant to be approachable young if desired.*Burghound Outstanding!*

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "Less impact but with a beautifully airy floral perfume. Hmm, now that’s classy – open, fluid, melting, perfumed flavour – that’s a really super wine with an undertow of minerality and almost chalky finishing texture. Simply excellent wine."(01/2025)
