The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Village has pleasing mineralité on the nose, almost making it worthy of a Premier Cru. It is very finely focused, with touches of hazelnut emerging with time. The palate is very well-balanced, with fine tension and poise. Not amazingly complex, yet it delivers in terms of purity and precision. Drink this over the next decade.(NM)

Note: from Les Pierres, Blanchot Dessous, Les Lombardes and young vine 1er fruit in En Virandot. A less elegant but even more complex nose features notes of rosemary oil, petrol, essence of apple, soft soil tones and a deft hint of wood toast. There is impressive density, punch and texture to the medium weight flavors that deliver excellent length on the balanced finale. This could use a bit better depth but that should reasonably occur if given a chance and overall, this offers fine quality for a villages-level Chassagne. Aromas of crisp stone fruit, white flowers and bread dough preface the 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Village, a medium-bodied, bright and fine-boned wine that's pretty and charming. I've wanted to visit Domaine Marc Morey for several years, as this discreet Chassagne-Montrachet has long produced excellent wines that fly somewhat under the radar. Its origins go back to great-grandfather Fernand Morey, whose whites and reds I've adored and who presided over winemaking between 1919 and around 1950. The eponymous Marc Morey was his son, who ran the domaine for the second half of the twentieth century. Today, it's Sabine Mollard who presides, having joined the family estate in 2003. Fruit is gently crushed and pressed pneumatically, with a short and comparatively static cycle, followed by debourbage overnight at 12 degrees centigrade and the beginning of alcoholic fermentation in tank before barreling down. Working with a wide variety of coopers (including Chassin and François Frères), Sabine stirs the lees until the end of malolactic fermentation. Regional appellations see nine months in barrel, with the rest racked to tank just before harvest and bottled, under natural cork, in early spring.(WK)

Fermented in temperature-controlled vats, the wine ages on its fine lees in 25% new oak, undergoing bâtonnage until malolactic conversion is complete. Delicate Asian pear, fine hits of Eureka lemon zest, citrus blossoms, Marcona almond, and soft notions of nutmeg and vanilla bean. Lovely licks of minerality in the lingering finish—a wine of elegance and finesse.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "Three parcels; Lombards, Pierre and Blanchots and a little declassified 1er from Virondots.Volume, some yeasty accents but becoming more perfumed. Certainly the most incisive but clean and streamlined wine so far – really juicy finishing like biting into fresh fruit – that’s a lovely wine with a slowly fading finish with an accent of creamy barrel…"(01/2025)
