Crafted from vines planted in clay and limestone soils, Cécile Chassagne's 2022 Gigondas exhales aromas of spices, pepper, dark cherries and mulberries. Medium to full-bodied, enrobing and layered, it's dense and framed by structured tannins that remain elegant and velvety, concluding with a long, elegant finish. This blend of 80% Grenache Noir, 10% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah, vinified with whole bunches, was matured for six months in used barrels and large barrels. (YC)

The 2022 Gigondas is mostly Grenache yet includes 10% each Syrah and Mourvèdre. It has a complex, old school vibe in its fresh strawberry and framboise-like fruit as well as notes of green herbs and sappy flowers. This nicely balanced, elegant 2022 shines for its complex, nuanced style, and while it's already drinking nicely, it should evolve gracefully over the coming 8-10 years or so.

Cecile Chassagne's father helped establish the Cru appellation of Gigondas in 1971. It was also the year he planted his own vineyards. Still using those plantings, Cecile makes classically styled Gigondas that showcases the cooler aspect of the region with its vibrant raspberry fruit, tobacco and garrigue notes. Using large format wood (all many years old), there is no heavy or saturated infusion of new oak, just a purely made example of Grenache, with a little Syrah and Mourvedre. The vintage was perfect for Cecile and this is one of her best wines to date. With this sharp a price (under $20!), this is a great way to approach this appellation and see why I drink more Gigondas than Chateauneuf!

Notes

Named for the family's second-generation winemaker, Cécile Chassagne took over the vineyard in Gigondas that had been originally planted by her father in 1970. This blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, and Syrah is made in a traditional method without destemming. A long fermentation in open-topped wood tanks is followed by aging the wine for four months in large Allier oak casks. The resulting wine is a medium-bodied, meaty, and elegant expression of Gigondas terroir.
