Coming from the northern end of the appellation, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain District is all varietal aged 22 months in 90% new oak, and I couldn't imagine a more majestic, regal wine. This beauty s saturated purple hue is followed by an incredible array of ripe black fruits, smoked tobacco, loamy earth, lavender, and graphite. Winemaker Chris Carpenter has hit an undeniable home run with his 2021s, and this is unquestionably one of the legendary wines in the vintage. Full-bodied and massively concentrated, with velvety tannins and remarkable purity, it will be drinkable with just 4-5 years of bottle age and evolve for 30-40 years in cold cellars.

Decanter
The Lokoya Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is primarily sourced from two sites: the 6.4ha Wallis Vineyard and Rhyolite Ridge (7.2ha), which are primarily volcanic soils. Winemaker Chris Carpenter says that Diamond Mountain is in the warmest part of Napa Valley's mountain terroirs. The tannins are softer, the pH is a little higher, and the acids are a little more savoury. With the 2021 vintage, Carpenter is right about the tannins being a bit softer, and they are very long. The wine is surprisingly medium-to-full-bodied, with very beautiful aromatics of sandalwood and sage, cherry blossoms and blood orange, and those soft tannins are superfine. Grippy acidity is very savoury, scented with a spicy herbaceousness that carries through a long and extended finish. The wine is so fresh and framed by an expressive vein of crushed stone and red volcanic minerality.

Black currants and baking spices with sweet tobacco and violets on the nose. The palate is full-bodied with tight-grained and well-integrated tannins that melt into the wine. The pine needle, fresh earth and forest flower character comes through clearly. One for the cellar but it will be beautiful in two or three years. Made from 100% cabernet sauvignon.

Wine Advocate
A blend of fruit from the family-owned Rhyolite Ridge Vineyard and Wallis Vineyard, Lokoya's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain combines black cherries and cassis with bay leaf and sage. Full-bodied and supple, with some blueberry shadings on the mid-palate, this is generous, but it still has an underlying mountain structure and a long, dusty but mouthwatering finish.
