2015 Calabretta Nerello Mascalese Vigne Vecchie Etna
93
Vinous
Review Date: 04/2024The 2015 Nerello Mascalese Vigne Vecchie is simply stunning, erupting from the glass with a burst of crushed black cherries, cloves, blood orange and hints of dusty earth. This is soft-textured, nearly fleshy in feel, with a core of tart red berry fruits offset by sour citrus as rosy inner florals form toward the close. It finishes with staining length and concentration, just lightly structured, leaving a sensation of hard red candies to fade. This is a vibrant vintage of Vigne Vecchie, but it possesses the balance for further evolution. (EG)

Notes
The Calabretta Nerello Mascalese Vigne Vecchie Etna 2015 is a striking example of traditional Etna winemaking, crafted by the Calabretta family on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, Sicily. The estate, renowned for its adherence to old-world methods, sources grapes from very old vines, some over 60 years in age, planted on the region’s unique volcanic soils. This Nerello Mascalese reflects both the character of the high-altitude vineyards and the distinct terroir of Etna. The 2015 vintage offers aromas of red berries, wild herbs, and a hint of ash, characteristic of the volcanic influence. On the palate, the wine is elegant and complex, with vibrant acidity, fine tannins, and a long, mineral-driven finish. Aged in large neutral oak barrels, it retains a traditional style, allowing the terroir and vine age to shine through. Perfect for pairing with grilled meats, mushroom dishes, or aged cheeses, this wine captures the essence of Mount Etna.
