The darkest of the reds, the 2020 Dos Dedos de Frente is a ripe and powerful Syrah. It's showy, perfumed and heady, hedonistic and supple, with less oak than in previous years. It comes from grapes from a supplier working together against ripeness and alcohol, working organically and with infusion of plants and regenerative agriculture. It fermented with some 6% Viognier. The change in this is 13.9% alcohol, avoiding high ripeness, using more neutral barrels and letting the wine rest in tank after the élevage in oak, delivering a wine with more varietal character à la Rhône, with a mixture of violets, tar and bacon fat. The palate is medium to full-bodied with abundant but fine-grained tannins. 6,995 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2023. (LG)

Smoky and meaty character here with plums and dark cherries as well as sweet spices and bark. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine, polished tannins. Spicy and dark-fruited. Broad-shouldered and even on the palate with a juicy, vibrant finish. Hints of crushed stones and white pepper, too. 95% syrah and 5% viognier co-fermented. Drink or hold.

Notes

The driving force behind El Escocés Volante is Norell Robertson, a Scottish Master of Wine, viticulturalist, winemaker and consultant. He spent most of the early 2000s travelling around the world making wine and assisting in numerous projects. When starting his own project in Spain it was obvious that it should be called the flying Scotsman, "El Escocés Volante". Intrigued by the potential of Spanish Garnacha he was naturally drawn to Aragon. As the birthplace of Garnacha, there is an incredible diversity of soils, exposures, and altitudes. Not to mention very old vineyards. The vineyards are dry farmed, they have been farming organically for over 10 years and are committed to regenerative viticulture. In the winery wines are made with native yeasts after relatively long cold soaks and uses primarily concrete and large old French oak barrels. The wines are aromatic, fresh, and complex. With depth and subtle texture, they express the rugged mountain terroir they come from. These are some of the most exciting wines that are coming from Spain right now. Dos Dedos is a Rhone inspired blend, Co-fermented Syrah and Viognier sourced from a vineyard that is so full of pudding stones that most Chateauneuf producers would be jealous. After fermentation the wine is aged in a mixture of large oak barrels from France and Austria.
