2012 Hugel "Grossi Laüe" Gewurztraminer Alsace

James Suckling
Review Date: 05/2018How can a gewurztraminer be this concentrated, have 14% alcohol and still be this subtle? It has all the floral notes to make you think spring 2012 has just arrived. A very long and delicate finish that's got a lot of fascinating spices. Drink or hold.

The 2012 Gewurztraminer "Grossi Laüe" is entirely sourced from the grand cru Sporen. It's still pretty reductive on the nose with a pure, fresh and spicy, even flinty aromatic expression. Rich but elegant and fine on the palate, this is an intense, very generous but well-balanced Gewurztraminer with good concentration and fine bitters on the tight and salty finish. It's an expressive and age-worthy, very elegant cru! 14.3% stated alcohol and 19 grams per liter of residual sugar. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2022.
2021 was a difficult vintage, with only 50% of the normal crop due to mildew, but the quality was good. It was disastrous in the south but better in the north. There is high acid and good concentration, and it was a long growing season, like 2010. In 2021, it was mildew problems, whereas in 2010, it was colure. The first-level wines won't be great because they were picked early, and Pinot Noir was challenging.(SR)

Ripe red-cheeked Mirabelle plums and peach fringed with rose petals on the nose promise juicy full-fruited expression. The palate keeps that promise with a flowing, almost creamy and evolving picture of peach, peach skin and wonderful lemon freshness. At six years of age, this wine has only just began its trajectory of development and, while lovely now, will continue maturing. The off-dry finish is long, balanced and zesty. (AZ)

The 2012 Gewurztraminer Grossi Laüe is from the Sporen Grand Cru; thick, heavy clay lends richness and opulence. Made from non-botrytised fruit, which now at ten years old, has left its rose petals behind and has honed in on ripe, juicy yellow peach, both bottled and fresh. This has peach jelly on the palate and quite an intentional phenolic bitterness to counter its smooth richness. This is rounded and feels medium sweet at 20g/L of residual sweetness, proving that Gewurztraminer needs to be mature. Lovely. (Medium)(AK)
