The 2021 season in the Uco Valley was exceptional, full of abundant red fruit in a cool year that has given rise to lively, long, and tense red wines. This one is full of tart red fruit and knife-sharp tannins, and the palate is brimming with herbs and flowers. One to drink now—or in another 10 or 20 years. This is a selection of the first vineyards that Zuccardi planted after removing an old apple orchard in Altamira, in the northern Uco Valley. Of the 50 hectares planted in 2007, they chose individual rows of massal selections from the family's vineyards in Maipú. The vineyards were planted 1,100 meters above sea level on deep silty and sandy soils with limestone-coated stone 80 cm below. The wine was aged entirely in concrete.

Blackberry, blueberry, bark, earth and dark mushroom aromas. Some spices and mountain herbs. Touches of cement. Medium-bodied with a real depth of fruit. Density and power at the end. It takes you deep in the center palate. Tannins are well assimilated and polished. No wood. Made in cement. Give it three to four years to open and come together.

The 2021 Finca Canal Uco leads with a wonderfully pure, deep core of black and purple fruits with savory, tar-like accents and lifted herbal, underbrush-tinged top notes. The palate is generous and lush yet balanced with an alluring, deft gracefulness that straddles burly, bramble-laden fruits with deep concentration and no excess weight. The finish is charred and smoke-driven, marrying strident, persistent and gently chewy tannins with focused, energetic acidity and cascading length. A beautiful combination of ripe fruits, burly structure and poise, this could use a year or two in the cellar to further integrate its tannin structure, but I suspect it will be fascinating to keep track of over the following decade. Sourced from vines in what Sebastián Zuccardi calls the “heart of Paraje Altamira”, marked by high levels of calcium carbonate, this is a typically bright, vibrant, transparent Malbec from a winery at the top of its game. All plum, liquorice and blackberry intensity, with layered, granular tannins and a refreshing chalky finish.
