"I like wood on Albariño, as long as it's subtle," says Sonia Castro and that's certainly the case here. Stainless steel fermented before ageing in foudres, it has the classic focus and chiselled acidity of the 2021 vintage in the Salnés Valley, with flavours of lemon juice, green apple and orange zest and a hint of baking spice sweetness. 2024-30

2021 was a cooler and rainier year with higher acidity, so some wines went through (partial) malolactic. The 2021 Albariño - Tradición spent one year in foudre and another six months in stainless steel and has a more developed nose with notes of tropical fruit, yellow plums and quince. It has a vibrant palate with 13% alcohol, a pH of 3.1 and eight grams of acidity, coming through as very dry and medium-bodied. 3,000 bottles were filled in January 2023. (LG)

What could be the best wine tradition of Spain, is producers holding on to their wines. The gift of time. There is something about how even just a year makes a difference. One of my favorite expressions for this is “settled”. There is a more relaxed feeling to these wines. What normally comes to mind are red wines, Reservas and Gran Reservas, but it is a thing with white wine too. The first sniff of this wine gives me that impression. It is not oaky aromas, there are some faint French oak notes here, but the aromas have more delineation. Almost as if viewed through a prism. It is not that extreme but for me there is just more distance between the layers of citrus, stone and tropical fruits. The soft herbal and white floral tones have more space but shaded.... sorry, it is getting late, but I hope that this makes some sense. It is that shading, that soft delineation that is the settled thing. And then on the palate, those flavors are focused! Not quite laser like, but all the fruit becomes coiled around the fresh acid and a saline minerality. The wild thing is it is not tart. Mouthwatering, but not aggressive, and long. The fruit softens and lingers and fascinating to me, those other flavors reappear on the finish bringing another layer to this wine.

Notes

Lagar de Costa is a small family run winery that is located in the prestigious region of Val de Salnes. The winery is located 100s of meters from the shores of the Ria de Arousa. They farm traditionally using the local version of the pergola called Parrales. The winery is currently run by the family's 4th generation, and they are driven to showcase not only the inherent quality of their local variety, but to also show off it versatility as well. They do this by using different styles of winemaking as well as highlighting the potential of single parcels. A winery to keep your eyes on. There is a tradition of aging Albariño in Rias Baixas. The additional time spent in aging vessels and in bottles are believed to allow the fruit tones of the varietal to become more expressive. At Lagar de Costa this is their bottling that follows that tradition and adds their own twist. The twist, the wine does not undergo Malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for 1 year in a 2500L French oak foudre before going into bottle, and this is their current release; the 2021. Time, and not just what was spent in oak has given this wine power, depth and intensity. It is penetrating and fresh, with that classical saline minerality driving through the developed stone and muted tropical fruit aromas and flavors.
