Decanter
Compared to Meurtet, La Côte Glacière has a warmer south-facing terroir which affords riper, fleshier fruits. Although on a par with Meurtet’s charm and Pinot purity, this exhibits more power, depth and weight. The Pinot Noir vines are also older - on average about 50 years of age - and provide more concentrated berries. Although this is sweet and gourmand, it's not remotely overdone thanks to its ample minerality, freshness and balance. Super elegance and length complete the package. This is good now but will improve over the next 10-15 years with consummate ease. A gastronomic Champagne. (JS)

Slightly more opulent on the nose than the other new single-vineyard 2012 from Deutz. Lots of strawberries and cooked pears with biscuit undertones. Full-bodied, very deep and flavorful with lots of beautiful fruit and a long, long finish. Fantastic.

The 2012 Brut Millésimé William Deutz La Côte Glacière is a Champagne of real substance and textural depth. All of the richness of Aÿ comes through in an expansive, resonant Champagne loaded with character. The flavors are rich and more burnished with Pinot character than in the brighter Meurtet bottling. Spice, leather, dried herbs and sweet plum fruit build over time. This is a fabulous showing from Deutz. (AG)
