Youthful, charming and exquisitely expressed, the wine is wonderfully flavoursome within an elegant frame and structure. Delicious notes of lemon sorbet, mandarin, Gala apple and acacia, lead to a delectably appealing palate offering gentle sweetness with perfectly pitched acidity. Mouth-watering and hugely appealing. Certified organic. Style: Medium-dry. At its best: now to 2037.

The last time this wine was reviewed was in the 2015 vintage. It was made in 2017 (tiny production), 2020 and now this, the 2022 SV 5182 Sauvignon Blanc. The wine comes from low-cropped, exposed canopies and was picked riper. It was barrel fermented in mainly (80% this year) large old-format French oak, the balance in tank, and then left on the fine lees in the 600-liter neutral oak barrels for 10 months. On the nose, the wine gives us aromas of cassis and bramble, coriander and white pepper, cracked fennel seed and caper brine. This is elegant and restrained, the oak and fruit expertly matched. Often the marriage between oak and Sauvignon Blanc can be tumultuous; the two are not necessarily made for each other, so their matching must be sensitive and well thought through, as this is. It tastes like Marlborough but elevated. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. (EL)

Intense, tangy riesling with lime, white rose petal, oyster shell and apricot flavours. The wine has an exquisite sweet/sour tension and a lengthy medium-dry finish.

A medium-sweet riesling with sliced green apples, canned pears and light spices. Fresh and sweet at the end. From organically grown grapes. Drink now. Screw cap.

I love sweet Riesling. Yes, I know. Over the last decade or so consumer preference for sweet wines in general have been waning. But for me, for spicy cuisine, or just on its own, sweeter style Rieslings are some of my favorites wines made anywhere. The TWR M (medium-dry) Riesling is one of my all-time favorites. Despite the fact that TWR is mostly known for its Sauvignon Blanc, what they do best is Riesling. At 23 g/L RS, this has a beautiful dollop of sweetness, but isn’t too cloying or distracting, in fact, it melds perfectly with the wine. This sits on the drier side of where you would find German Kabinet.. I love the incredibly floral nose on this. Beautifully clean and full of character, I would put this up as one of the best examples of Riesling being made in New Zealand today.

Notes

Te Whare Ra is our longest direct import relationship — 13 years strong — from the Southern Hemisphere. Located in the Marlborough sub-region of Renwick, the winery was originally established in 1979 and purchased by the Anna and Jason Flowerday in 2003. The couple both come from wine families — Anna from McLaren Vale in Australia and Jason from Marlborough — and met while working in Australia before deciding to build their family and business in New Zealand. K&L is TWR’s exclusive US importer, even as their small boutique winery has grown and the accolades have accumulated. In 2025, The Real Review ranked TWR as the #3 Winery in New Zealand, and the #1 Winery in Marlborough. This is incredible recognition for a small 11-hectare winery resisting many of the dominant trends in the region. For the past two decades, Anna and Jason have been producing elegant, expressive wines from certified organic vineyards. This is incredibly unusual for Marlborough, where just 4% of the region’s vineyards are organic. The Flowerdays are proud of this distinction – their SV5182 wines refer to “Single Vineyard 5182” which is their BioGro NZ certification number. The TWR wines are handmade and honest. More importantly, they are a family endeavor. Jason and Anna raised their two sets of fraternal twin daughters on the property, with their home located just fifty feet from both the winery and the vines. Their work is a heartfelt labor of love, where quality and purity shine through each bottle.
