The 2022 Riesling 'D' leads on the nose with cut lime and lemon oil, wet chalk and citrus pith, and white flowers emerge on the palate. The vines were planted in 1979 and are the oldest vines in Marlborough. The acidity is dry and fine; it spools through the fruit and is woven as threads through the phenolics. This is a gorgeous wine, crystalline and chalky, with three grams of residual per liter. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. (EL)

Aromas of ruby grapefruit, sliced pear and lemongrass followed by beeswax, paraffin and a hint of smoke. Light- to medium-bodied with mouthwatering acidity. Underlying hay and savory herb notes. Lots of layers and complexity. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Te Whare Ra is the most unique vineyard in all of Marlborough. Planted in 1979–long before Sauvignon Blanc was Queen of Marlborough, the Te Whare Ra vineyard was planted to Alsatian varieties. Today, the Te Whare Ra vineyard is home to the oldest commercially producing vines in the region. Anna and Jason Flowerday purchased this historic vineyard in 2001 and have been farming it organically ever since. Their Dry Riesling is made exclusively from this old vine block from the original vineyard. And as you would expect, the quality and concentration that comes off this block is next-level. Aromatically, the TWR Dry Riesling opens with Jasmine and honeycrisp apple with notes of lemon juice and nuances of almond butter. On the palate, it’s an absolute rush of a wine. Powerful, linear, focused. It doesn’t quite have the level of acidity you’d find in the Mosel, and much more resembles great producers from the Rheinhessen. This is absolutely what I’d call a high acid wine, but not so crisp that it would overpower food. Easily one of K&L’s top Rieslings at its price.

Notes

Te Whare Ra is our longest direct import relationship — 13 years strong — from the Southern Hemisphere. Located in the Marlborough sub-region of Renwick, the winery was originally established in 1979 and purchased by the Anna and Jason Flowerday in 2003. The couple both come from wine families — Anna from McLaren Vale in Australia and Jason from Marlborough — and met while working in Australia before deciding to build their family and business in New Zealand. K&L is TWR’s exclusive US importer, even as their small boutique winery has grown and the accolades have accumulated. In 2025, The Real Review ranked TWR as the #3 Winery in New Zealand, and the #1 Winery in Marlborough. This is incredible recognition for a small 11-hectare winery resisting many of the dominant trends in the region. For the past two decades, Anna and Jason have been producing elegant, expressive wines from certified organic vineyards. This is incredibly unusual for Marlborough, where just 4% of the region’s vineyards are organic. The Flowerdays are proud of this distinction – their SV5182 wines refer to “Single Vineyard 5182” which is their BioGro NZ certification number. The TWR wines are handmade and honest. More importantly, they are a family endeavor. Jason and Anna raised their two sets of fraternal twin daughters on the property, with their home located just fifty feet from both the winery and the vines. Their work is a heartfelt labor of love, where quality and purity shine through each bottle.
