Best known for its room of amphorae, COS's Frappato bypasses terracotta in favour of a traditional concrete tank vinification. It's a gorgeous and pure expression with cool and precise raspberry, wild strawberry and black cherry aromas followed in the mouth by pretty strawberry, pomegranate, blood orange and raspberry. Sapid, energetic and fresh, the finish resonates with balancing bitter notes of pine resin and wild herbs. Gorgeous. Organic. (JB)

Perfumed and floral, the 2023 Frappato mixes geranium and violet tones with nuances of blood orange and blackberry. Lifted and graceful in style, it offers juicy acidity and crisp wild berry fruits that add lovely tart tension toward the close. The 2023 tapers off long and fresh with a perfumed, flowery resonance that lingers. (EG)

The nose is earthy and umami, with aromas of damp soil, mushrooms and graphite, while undertones of flowers and plums provide a hint of sweetness. Juicy figs, plums and mixed berries flood the palate, dusted with a sophisticated pinch of salt and pepper and lifted by acid that positively shines above flexible tannins. (DC)

Notes

Founded in 1980 by three friends—Giambattista Cilia, Cirino Strano, and Giusto Occhipinti—Azienda Agricola COS has become a pioneer in natural winemaking in Sicily. They were among the first to embrace organic and biodynamic farming practices in the region, and they’re renowned for their use of clay amphorae, a nod to ancient winemaking traditions that highlight the purity and expression of their wines. The Frappato is a signature example of their dedication to native Sicilian varieties, showcasing the grape’s delicate and vibrant nature. COS wines are crafted with minimal intervention, allowing the land's unique terroir to shine. This winery’s approach to preserving the integrity of the fruit and the environment is what sets them apart, making their wines a true reflection of Sicily’s rich viticultural history.
