2022 Domaine Charles Audoin Marsannay "Clos du Roy"
95
James Suckling
Review Date: 07/2024What an enticing nose of red fruits with only a whiff of toasty oak. Charming and filigree with super-silky tannins and an underlying firmness supporting the medium- to full-bodied palate. You could easily mistake this for a Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru from a leading producer, particularly in the very long and precise, minerally finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Marsannay Clos du Roy has admirable transparency on the nose with nicely focused, vibrant scents of red cherry and crushed strawberry. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, very good concentration and lightly spiced darker fruit toward the Gevrey-like finish. Bravo. This is a great Clos du Roy. Tasted at merchants' 2022 Burgundy tastings in London.(NM)

Here a discreet application of wood surrounds the fresh, cool and restrained red and dark pinot fruit where a floral top note adds a touch of elegance. The more concentrated medium weight flavors possess excellent intensity while the moderately firm and youthfully austere finish flashes more evident minerality on the balanced and sneaky long finish. This is built to repay up to a decade of keeping but could reasonably be approached after 5 years.*Burghound Outstanding Top Value!*

Offering up aromas of cherries, raspberries, rose petals and dark chocolate, Audoin's 2022 Marsannay Clos du Roy is medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with bright acids and a succulent, charming profile.
Cyril Audoin presides over this 14-hectare Marsannay reference point, and he has produced excellent wines in both colors (to say nothing of a benchmark rosé) in the 2022 vintage. Soils are cultivated mechanically, and yields are kept moderate in the vineyards. In the winery, extractions are gentle and élevage lasts two winters, beginning in barrels (mostly from François Frères) followed by some months in tank. The style is pure and seamless, emphasizing bright fruit tones and supple tannins in reds and texture combined with freshness in white. What's more, the wines are admirably consistent from vintage to vintage.(WK)
Staff Reviews

The Clos du Roy comes from a vineyard that is most assuredly going to be elevated to 1er Cru status in the next few years. The wine here is a tad more introverted than the Clos de Jeu with a darker red fruit feel and more spice notes throughout. Excellent richness and concentration this sleek red displays deep berry fruit with good acidity, structure and balance. A very serious Marsannay that can be enjoyed now or left to age gracefully in the cellar for the next 5-15 years.

Email LiliaFirm and structured, this cuvee from Charles Audoin will benefit from extra time in a bottle. It's concentrated and powerful with some tannins and dark fruit profile, with black cherries, pomegranate and red plum, alongside baking spices. Good acidity will ensure successful aging and development of earthier tones.
