The 2020 Gattinara Molsino is a dark, brooding Gattinara. Black cherry, plum, licorice, crushed rocks, lavender and spice all race across the palate. A wine of somber intensity, the 2020 is built for the long haul. Deep and beguiling, firm tannins enshroud the long, building finish. (AG)

The 2020 Gattinara Molsino initially seems incredibly fresh and minty, presenting a more angular profile, with rocky notes of iron-rich earth. Offering both ripe tannins and ripe structure, it feels elegant but has a more rigid backbone. That being said, it’s going to take time to soften, but it’s worth cellaring for those with the patience to do so. (AF)

The Conterno Nervi 2020 Gattinara Vigna Molsino is Barolo-like in character, says vintner Roberto Conterno, although Gattinara tends to be a little warmer throughout the year compared to Barolo, thus rendering a more generous and immediate side of Nebbiolo. This wine is layered with dark fruit, spice and sweet earth. The Vigna Valferana is more mineral and vertical in character, whereas this wine is textured and velvety. Indeed, its name Molsino is a derivative of a local word for "soft." (ML)

The main difference between ‘Vigna Valferana’ and ‘Vigna Molsino’ is the soil composition. Valferana is higher in altitude and slightly sandier. The vineyard position result in a lighter, more fragrant style of Nebbiolo, this wine emphasize finesse over power. Valeferana is floral and ethereal, notes of violet, raspberry, crushed herbs, and orange. Really Burgundian. Molsino, on the other hand, sits in an amazing amphitheater with optimal sun exposure. The soil also contains more clay than what you usually find in Gattinara. Molsino is known to produce the most powerful and age-worthy expression of Gattinara. Molsino is all about Dark cherry, wild berries, licorice, and dried rose petals. Bold and structured with a firm tannin. Galloni calls Molsino the next Monfortino for this reason. I like them both, I think they compliment each other, at this price point you are drinking some of the best juice you can find in Italy. There is no doubt about it.
