2022 La Costa Vespaiolo

2022 La Costa Vespaiolo

Review Date: 08/2025

The 2022 La Casta “Vespaiolo” radiates sophistication and finesse with structured notes of fresh pear, zesty lemon, soft notes of jasmine and a whisper of Castelvetrano olive. Electrifying hits of minerality excite the tongue—yes, yes, yes! Fun fact: Vespa is wasp in Italian, named as such because they’re irresistibly drawn to this grape’s high sugar content once fully ripe. For a mind-blowing experience, pair with white asparagus in a hollandaise sauce.

What an interesting little gem from the Veneto - Vespaiolo, an indigenous varietal and normally made into a dessert style wine, is given the stage in this fully dry still wine from La Costa. I love it when we get these sort of wines in stock - Vespaiolo, like many grapes in Italy, was once at risk of going instinct - being pushed out by other mainstream varietals - and I am super grateful that producers like La Costa and others maintain plantings of these really unique and special varieties. On the nose, incredibly aromatic with notes of orange peels, chamomile tea, and green apple skin, the wine on the palate is zesty and citrus forward, with tons of stonefruit mixed in as well. Dont let the age of the wine here fool you - this is still incredibly acid driven, making for a delicous white to be had on a hot summers day. Hard, nutty cheeses are going to be this wines best friend.

One of the coolest things in a tasting is tasting a new varietal of grape. For me, heathen that I am, Vespaiolo is a new variety and an incredibly welcome one. Just a really welcoming nose, there's some apples and pears, a lot of lemon, a little touch of something creamy and a really nice touch of flowers and a little bit of wet stone. This is just absolutely delicious, super crushable, and probably should be on your summer white wine rotation list. The palate is really lovely with great fruit, and not tart despite having a really healthy and fresh line of acidity. There's a little sweetness to the fruit despite the wine being totally dry, and it's really that which cements this as quintessential pool wine. Food is optional, but always welcome, but mostly what you want is that fat sunbeam right in your face as you drink this real nice and cold from your favorite outdoor wine glass. Plus you can educate your friends about this cool new-to-you Italian white wine grape that you found all by yourself.

Notes

La Costa's Vespaiolo is a light and refreshing white wine from the Veneto region of Italy. It opens with crunchy green apple and lemon zest notes that give way to pressed white flowers. The crisp palate pops with mixed orchard fruits and roasted citrus peel, finishing with a touch of sea salt. This wine is best enjoyed young, within 1 to 2 years of production, and served chilled at 8 - 10°C. It pairs excellently with seafood, light pasta dishes, and fresh cheeses.
