Xurxo Alba's biggest production Albariño uses grapes from 60 different parcels in the Salnés Valley, most of which are farmed organically. Impressive for an entry-point wine, it combines stainless steel and 40% foudre-aged components, offering notes of beeswax and wet stones, steely acidity and a mineral core. 2024-29

Aromas of limes and green apples with a salty note. The palate is nervy, medium- bodied, textural and incisive. This comes from diverse parcels situated less than 100 meters from the Umia River delta. Drink now.

93+ points " The eponymous flagship village white 2023 Albamar comes from many different Albariño plots, owned and rented, on different soils but mostly granite. The juice from the pressing of the full clusters fermented and matured in stainless steel and oak foudres where it was kept with the lees for eight months. It has clarity, purity and transparency, which seems to define the 2023 vintage, and it is floral and perfumed but serious, with a vibrant palate. It is easy to drink, with moderate alcohol (12.5%), good freshness, a pH of 3.18 and 7.8 grams of acidity and finishes with a salty touch. It's very tasty, one of the finest vintages—if not the finest—for this bottling, which has also grown in volume. 95,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in April 2024." (LG)

The nose opens with delicate citrus blossom and slightly grassy edge, paired with a zesty citrus peel note on the palate. A slight hint of effervescence adds a refreshing liveliness to this Albariño, kicking off a peppery minerality that lingers on the palate and leaves behind the impression of crisp spring air and salinity of a coastal Galician breeze. It’s medium-bodied with bright mouth-watering acidity, offering a well-balanced structure that serves as an excellent palate cleanser to sip slowly between tapas.

Salty, fresh with great aromatics. This is a wine and a producer with a lot of hype. The first impressions of this wine are great! Xurxo Alba is one of the most important producers in what I will call the 2nd wave of Albariño. He is standing on the shoulders of the greats like Zarate and Do Ferreiro and he is elevating the possibility for the region. This wine is pure. Green orchard fruits with just a hint of apricot and that lovely salty marine quality that is classic for the Val de Salnes. That purity gives the wine an elegance that is unexpected for the varietal. It has to be the combination of the organic fruit, the whole cluster fermentation, the native yeast, the less aging, the use of large neutral barrels, the suppression of Malolactic fermentation, and of course, the winemaker himself. The focus of this wine is great, the crisp acid pulls the pure fruit across the palate and all the while the flavors seem to build and build. This is an incredible expression of the varietal, and this is not the wine that he is best known for! What can I say, this wine has a supple texture, and mouthwatering acidity which are the perfect platform for the beautiful fruit tone. Xurxo deserves his reputation.

Notes

This is a stunning example of this classic Spanish white wine made by one of the region’s most exciting and heralded producers, Xurxo Alba. His family has been farming and making wine with their vineyards for generations but it was not until he finished his viticultural and winemaking studies that they decided to make a business out of it. Xurxo, inspired by the extreme marine environment of his native Rias Baixas, tries and succeeds to capture that in his wines. He farms organically and as sustainably as possible, which requires enormous effort in one of the dampest wine growing regions in the country. He uses native yeasts and long cold fermentations to bring out the purity and depth of Albariño. The wines are fermented and aged in a mix of stainless steel tank and large neutral oak barrels He suppresses Malolactic fermentations thinking that the natural acids of the wine better express that salty, marine minerality of the region. It is no wonder that his wines have captured the imagination of enthusiasts around the world. With less than 13 ha of holding, all in small family sized parcels the production is very limited. Fresh, mineral driven and long. This is a Albariño that raised the expectations of the varietal, but that is what Xurxo does, and this is his entry level wine!
