Deeply savoury and charismatic with layers of steely mineral character which trail towards the long, salty finish. Impeccable juicy and succulent with weight and substance. (DWWA 2024)

The 2022 Muscadet "Péninsula" Vieilles Vignes bottling from Domaine Gadais is truly and old vine cuvée, as these vines were planted all the way back in 1929! The 2022 version of Péninsula Vieilles Vignes is a brilliant young Muscadet, offering up a lovely combination of ripeness and precision in its aromatic constellation of breadfruit, raw almond, lemon, a lovely touch of leesy tones, a fine base of minerality, white flowers and a lovely touch of ocean breeze in the upper register. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a superb core of old vine fruit, great mineral undertow, zesty acids and impeccable balance on the long, crisp and very, very classy finish. Great juice. (Drink between 2024-2050) (JG) 94+

The quality of what I am tasting from the Muscadet region has grown by leaps and bounds over the past few years. Still a great area for lots of lovely values, there is a tier of wine emerging from some top producers that is so compelling you may begin setting aside more costly whites like Chablis, Sancerre and white Burgundy, in lieu of these steely mineral driven whites. The Gadais "Peninsula" is one such release. Coming from the oldest vines with one parcel dating back to 1929, all the grapes are planted on a plateau over mica and gneiss. Extended lees aging lends depth and richness which starts steering you towards Chablis territory in terms of complexity. The wine has notes of apple, pear, a hint of beeswax and whisps of salinity which combined with balancing acidity and an outstanding mouthfeel make for a long lasting mineral driven finish. Muscadet is one of my favorite oyster wines but the richness and complexity in the Peninsula also make for a stellar pairing with heartier fish dishes such as pan roasted monkfish, grilled halibut or a sole meunier.

Just in time for the height of Spring! This crisp and refreshing white has some very nice white flower scents with mellow lemon and a hint if raw pine nut. On the palate, it has lush lemon cream mixed with upper palate saltiness and just a little beeswax. The finish is very long and mineral laden with bright citrus fruits. This one is super versatile for both those who love tart and tangy white wines and also those who like a hint of richness and body to their wines. It is also cellar worthy. I do wish that it came in magnums, though!

Notes

In 1952, Louis Gadais was one of the first independant bottlers of his own wines. That is quite something in a region that has long been known for producing loads of simple white wines. That early philosophy has served the estate well where their dedication to the grape Melon de Bourgogne has led to different bottlings based on soils types and extended sur lie aging. The "Peninsula" is all from vines planted on the Saint-Fiacre-sur-Maine plateau over mica-gneiss soils. The average age of the vines is over 50 years of age with one plot planted in 1929. The wine is fermented with native yeasts and rests on the lees for 17 months in stainless steel vat. Also bottles without fining and filtration. The nose has notes of peach, pear and wet stones and is an idela pairing with white fish dishes like turbot and halibut.
