2019 Big Basin Vineyards "GSM - Gabilan Mountains" Monterey Rhône Blend
95
Vinous
The 2019 GSM Gabilan Mountains is a dense, powerful wine. Readers will have to cellar this for a year or two to allow the full breadth of its aromatics to emerge. Rose petals, sweet red berry fruit, blood orange and spice start to reveal themselves with some aeration. The 2019 was done with 100% stems and aged in a combination of concrete and neutral oak. In a word: fabulous. (AG)

The 2019 GSM - Gabilans Mountains is composed of 39% Mourvedre, 33% Grenache, and 28% Syrah. The Mourvedre is sourced from old vines at Rodnick Farm Vineyard in Chalone. The vines grow in limestone soils at 1,600ft elevation. The Syrah and Grenache are from Coastview Vineyard at 2,200ft, with vines planted in decomposed granite. The wine is fermented whole-cluster in a mixture of concrete and steel, then aged in concrete and large format neutral oak.
