Blend of three terroirs on clay limestone and flint. Marius Tabordet claims that fermentations as long as his, which usually last until Christmas, are possible only if the fruit is nourished by healthy soil. Bottled recently, to be released May 2024. Organic. This wine is sold by Majestic as Domaine des Patureaux Organic Pouilly-Fumé. Certified organic and biodynamic (Demeter).Complex wild-flowers nose. Great grip and texture on the palate. Lots of character. (JR)

Domaine Tabordet has firmly established itself as one of our best and brightest from the Loire. Marius Tabordet along with his cousin Gael, have taken the reins at their family estate and have really come out swinging making Tabordet "the" producer to watch in Pouilly-Fume and Sancerre. The winery is in the region of Sancerre (in the village of Verdigny) but their most important holdings lie in Pouilly-Fume and that is the part of the Tabordet portfolio that we concentrate on. When I met Marius several years ago (right before the pandemic) he was excited that they had just finished their organic certification, and not to be undone with the results, they began working on their Demeter Biodynamic certification. The soils in Pouilly-Fume are high in silex (flint) content which gives that smoky mineral quality that I love. The regular domaine wine (the one you are reading about here) is a blend of parcels across all three major soils types - silex (flint), terres blanches (marl) and caillottes (limestone). This wine is always filled with freshness and vibrancy and the quality of the 2023 vintage really shines. There is a sinewy frame of grapefruit but it is surrounded by notes of passion fruit, wet hay and lime zest. This is mouthwatering and delicious Pouilly Fume that easily stands toe-to-toe with the best in the region and blows so many other wines from nearby Sancerre away. And still maintaining that under $20 price point, truly makes this one of the best Sauvignon Blanc buys at K&L!

Highly attractive and precise, this wine was cultivated from three distinct terroirs (silex, marl and limestone) for added complexity and textural elegance. A wine of wonderful poise and charm, embellished with aromas of grapefruit and passionfruit married to a classic palate of lime blossom, wet stone and citrus rind. Uncork it with breaded, sauteed calamari or swordfish skewers for a spring feast!

If you are an individual who is not fond of Sauvignon blanc because you tried a pungent New Zealand once, it's time to give this varietal another chance. I promise it'll be worth it. Aromas of white flowers and citrus followed by a streak of green fruit like lime and green apples. lively minerality, clean and dry but gentle on the palate. What a fantastic treat this wine is!

Notes

Nestled in the village of Verdigny, Domaine Tabordet was run by brothers Yvon and Pascal Tabordet, who took the reins back in 1981. Yvon's son Marius and Pascal's son Gael have since joined the estate and now run the operation. With five hectares in Sancerre and 16 in Pouilly-Fumé, they work organically and biodynamically across the varied soils of both regions, creating some of the best under-the-radar wines in the Central Loire. Wine growing in Pouilly-Fumé dates back to the fifth century when the Romans dominated the area. In 1937 it became an official Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) of France. Wine called Pouilly-Fumé is required to be 100% Sauvignon Blanc. The soils here have a similar character to those of Sancerre, but one of the defining characteristics of Pouilly-Fumé wines is the smoky, flinty aromas (fumé). These aromas come from the high concentration of silex, a.k.a. flint, found in the soil here. By taking a very simple but well-focused approach to farming and vinification, Domaine Tabordet does a fantastic job of letting the grape and all of its character shine through. The domaine Pouilly-Fumé comes from the three major soils and is fermented with native yeasts and is aged entirely in stainless steel tank. *Biodynamic*
