Hypnotic nose of the perfectly ripe wild berries and the most aromatic wild herbs plus the smoke from autumn bonfires. Already the first impression on the expansive and extremely dynamic palate is extraordinary, but then the mineral turbo ignites and this just blows you away in the incredibly long, bright finish. Limited production. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Even more successful, the 2021 Ermitage Le Méal has a similar broad, rounded, expansive texture as well as beautiful notes of black cherries, darker berries, spice, dried flowers, and textbook Hermitage smoked meats and leather. As with the Les Greffieux, it's already complex, has medium to full body, ripe, velvety tannins, and a great finish. One terrific point in the vintage is that the terroirs show clearly in the wines, and that's becomes obvious when tasting through the single vineyard releases from Chapoutier.

Very immediate and fruity in style and a touch balsamic. Quite sappy acidity -- really intense in fact. Fairly introverted at the time of tasting, but the tannins are bold and powerful and demand long ageing. Vines are around 50 years old, and the wine is fermented in concrete, then aged in recently used oak barrels for around 14 months.(MW)

A sultry red, with a pronounced sanguine, meaty character, this offers a well-seasoned and harmonious mix of earthy, leafy elements matched to supple plum and cherry leather, with eucalyptus and refreshing mint notes. Profoundly minerally, with meaty accents and incense smoke echoing on the long, salty and texturally beautiful finish. Best from 2026 through 2042. —K.B.

Notes

John Livingstone Learmonth The Cradle of the Rhone: "(cask) deep red; the bouquet has accumulated a depth of mixed berries, with herbs, a note of prune that shows sun, is insistent, typical of Méal. The palate is broad, amply fuelled, rolls with a sure serving of dark red, mulberry, packed in fruit, is very persistent, lingering, the finish firm and compact. It’s a cooler than usual version of Méal. The attack is great – all fluid and iron together, an exciting moment, wakes you up, while there is a real surge on the finish, where it goes wham! It’s not grandiose, but is very good, has much character. From 2028. 2053-55." (10/2022)
