Pretty lemon colour with the lightest of green reflections. The bouquet is enchanting here, one of the wines with slightly riper notes, a suggestion of honeysuckle. There is excellent intensity yet no overt muscle. Now some lime blossom notes come into play. Ethereal and exuberant at the same time, yellow fruit with a chalky saline note as well though not high acidity is how Benoît describes it. I would like some of this in my cellar! Drink from 2028-2038.

Note: from a .27 ha parcel. As it often does, there is a suggestion of the exotic present on the aromas of orange peel, passion fruit, jasmine tea and a hint of citrus confit. The caressing, concentrated and solidly concentrated medium-bodied flavors exude evident minerality on the chiseled, chalky and superbly long and well-balanced finale. This too is excellent and warmly recommended.*Burghound Sweet Spot Outstanding!*

The aromatics here are fireworks! Toasted brioche, perfume counter florals, sweet pomelo and apple peel climb out of the glass. There is an initial explosion and generosity of fruit on the palate that then gets cinched up like a corset on the palate between the dry, minerally tones and serious acidity. The finishing texture has a delightful graininess to it. Give this at least three to four more years and don't worry about losing it in the cellar

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières En la Richarde is another of the high points of the range, unwinding in the glass with aromas of crisp nectarine, clear honey, white flowers, nutmeg and wet stones. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with tangy acids that lend it terrific cut, it concludes with a long, saline finish. Benoît Riffault is pleased with his 2022s, and with reason, as it numbers among his finest vintages to date. His harvest dates were more or less the same as in 2020, which is to say, relatively speaking, a little earlier, and that translates to impeccable balance across the board. But what are the rudiments of winemaking at this address today? Hand-harvested fruit is pressed without crushing, the press cycle lasting around three and a half hours and performing "quite a few," which is to say more than 20, rotations. The must is sulfited at the end of the press and settled for 24 hours, but Riffault retains most of the lees, fermenting in wood with ambient yeasts. Larger formats, including foudres, now complement 228-liter Burgundian barrels. The wines are racked to tank in July-August before the new vintage, whereas the premiers and grands crus spend as much as six months on their lees before bottling. All of Sauzet's wines are bottled with high-quality unbleached and unwaxed natural cork.(WK)

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "Chevalier side of FolatièresFresh and deep – hints of barrel still here. Wonderfully mineral and with an almost incisive cut to the mineral-citrus flavours. Clarity and growing intensity – but still retaining a calm aspect. Extra – practically GC finishing intensity – this is special – bravo!" (01/2024)
