Winemaker Angelos Iatrides and his Alpha Estate in the Amyndeon region of Greece, has become one of our favorite winemakers for Xinomavro. He is also quite adept as a white winemaker. There is cult-like-demand for his Sauvignon Blanc, but this Malagouzia is the one that you should really pay attention to. With notes of stone fruit and melon emerging from the glass, the Malagouzia also introduces distinct citrus notes of grapefruit peel and lemon zest. Where it shines is with a distinctive floral quality of honeysuckle and jasmine that really compels further scrutiny. Where the more famous Moscofileros of the Peleponnese are explosive on the nose with floral aromatics, Malagouzia curates the flowers from the garden without forcing you into the flower patch. This Malagouzia is one of the new crossover styles of whites we are seeing from Greece and is the kind of wine that invites sip after sip. I can't get enough of Angelos' wines!

Floral tones on the nose, with flavors of fresh ginger, chamomile, earl grey, honeydew melon, lemon rind, and a touch of lychee. Lively, with ample acidity, maintaining it's freshness, and a long smoky finish. A great example of Malagouzia, an aromatic varietal that was once nearly extinct.

This is an inviting and easy to enjoy wine that is also, at the same time, a little off the the beaten path. The nose is classic Malagouzia , floral and pretty and fun to smell. In the mouth, it is soft and fruity with stone fruit flavors. Nice to drink alone, it will go well with fish and light foods.

Notes

Located in the heart of Amyndeon in northwestern Greece, winemaker Angelos Iatrides established Alpha Estate in 1997. Working with a mix of international and indigenous varieties, Angelos crafts some of the most desirable wines in the region using his precise winemaking style. His Turtles Vineyard bottling is all from north-western exposed vines planted between 620-710 meters. At vinification, the grapes are destemmed and cold-soak macerated before pressing and fermentation in stainless steel tank begins. Once fermentation finishes, the wine is aged sur lie for a few months in tank. Malagouzia is a lively and aromatic grape showing flavors of melon, stone fruit, lychee and honeysuckle. Perfect with a nice chill and some "meze" to enjoy with friends around the dinner table.
