The wines of Yiannis Economou are singular for sure. Dabbling in Assyrtiko, the vines here are 45+ year vines, own-rooted and planted over limestone, sandy soils. Usually the Assyrtikos of Santorini are the only ones that have this intensity and length on the palate. The complex nose of dried apples, beeswax, salinity and minerality evolve in the mouth. The honeyed richness reminds me of the whites of Lopez de Heredia. They continue to expand as the wine opens in the glass. This is incredible Assyrtiko that ranks in the upper echelon of what is capable of this dynamic noble variety.

Deep intense petrol nose when it is first opened, softens after a couple hours to a still very petrol nose that has a lot of soy umami showing foremost. This is an incredibly savory and unique nose, all in the very best of ways, and buried deep underneath is this dense lemon pith and a little bit of honeyed apple and pear. The palate is also incredibly rich and savory, there's a through-line of salinity that runs along the edge of the acidity as well as the very pretty honey'd fruit from the nose. The mouthfeel is glorious and rich, almost a touch waxy and while there's an oxidative character to this, it just makes such complete sense. This is an absolutely brilliant wine that manages to overdeliver at its pricepoint, and not all $90 wines can say that

Notes

Yiannis Economou has reached cult like status among those in the know. His winemaking chops are fierce, having studied winemaking in Alba and working for producers Piedmont like Scavino and Ceretto and Bordeaux with Chateau Margaux. Taking that knowledge, he returned to Crete to work his family vineyards. He now works with some of the best old vines on the island, including parcels that are own-rooted inclduing rare clonal selections of the indigenous grape Liatiko. Using precise but low intervention winemaking methods and only native yeasts he creates some of the most cravable wines from all of Greece.
