2018 Franck Bonville "Pur Oger" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne

The 2018 Pur Oger Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs, with only 2,000 bottles produced, unfurls from the glass with notes of white flowers, lemon oil, blanched almonds and ripe orchard fruits. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, it's perfectly balanced, with a vinous texture and a long, saline finish. Vinified in stainless steel, it was matured under cork and disgorged with a dosage of 4.1 grams per liter. While the 2013 and 2017 vintages were not produced, the 2018 vintage showcases the meticulous craftsmanship of this limited release. (YC)

This is part of a trio of wines from Franck Bonville just begging to be opened as a vertical, along with the Pur Avize and Pur Mesnil. I have had all three, and this was perhaps my favorite of the line-up. The Pur Oger is full of citrus with some light fruitiness, and of course the acid and minerality you'd expect (perhaps you're sensing a theme here). All three wines have the same amount of lees aging and are the same grape (Chardonnay), and they're all not far from each other, yet each wine is subtly distinct. They all have similar elements, just shuffled differently, each providing a unique experience. If you can, try all three, and if you have to pick just one, there isn't a wrong choice!

As noted in the two counterparts to this wine, Pur Mesnil and Pur Avize, I fully recommend partaking in the horizontal tasting of all three of these Grand Cru village representations, as it is a rare opportunity to see the different terroirs in action. I find the Oger to be the most generous in fruit expression, and also offering the most depth on the palate of the two. Perhaps it can be considered the middle ground between the more mineral driven Avize and the opulent Mesnil. In any case, the pure chalk soils of Oger have offered up a lovely characterization of this little corner of the Côte des Blancs.
