Characteristic of her 2022s, pure luscious black fruit is apparent, supplemented by an alluring floral component. The tannins are sturdier yet still supple, and unobtrusive. There’s an uncommon elegance here. Dare I say, a charming Pommard. Les Chaponnières sits on the Volnay side, but near the village of Pommard itself, tucked in between Les Croix Noires and Les Rugiens. A portion of Parent’s vines were planted in 1929.(MA)

Burghound

Note: from 85+ year old vines. More moderate though still prominent wood sets off aromas of plum liqueur, earth, a suggestion of the sauvage and a variety of pretty floral elements. There is again excellent volume to the sappy and seductively textured yet powerful medium-bodied flavors that firm up substantially on the beautifully long finale where the only reproach is a touch of warmth. Worth considering, especially since Chaponnières always ages well.*Burghound Outstanding!*

Vinous

The 2022 Pommard Les Chaponnières 1er Cru contains 30% whole bunches and was raised in 40% new French oak. The nose offers brambly red fruit, hints of graphite and an endearing sense of Pinoté; this is more elegant than the Chanlins. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins and fresh acidity. Again, a little powdery in texture with a long tail on the finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle.(NM)

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "The most sophisticated wine of Pommard.’ Grand and Petit Epenots assembled A silky width of perfume – a little cushion too. Vibrant, energetic – über-fine tannin but not drying – a hint of licorice in this complexity. It’s not quite as direct as I was expecting but – voila – the rest of this is proper Epenots and great! Wait 10 years and then drink forever!" (01/2024)
