A super wine, let alone one from such a challenging year, the 2021 Gigondas Ventabren is an assemblage of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Cinsault. The Grenache was picked in the second half of October, and it fermented as whole clusters, with indigenous yeasts; maturation was in foudres and demi-muids. Scents of rose petals accent strawberries and raspberries on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is lush and silky, with ample length. (JC)

Soft and easy-going style, the sample tasted is a touch volatile. The acidity is relatively mild for the vintage and there's a good sense of ripeness. Raspberry acidity into the finish. Partly destemmed, fermented in concrete tanks, aged in old barrels. (MW)

The ruby-hued 2021 Gigondas Ventabren checks in as a classic blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and the rest Cinsault that was raised all in older barrels. It has a terrific perfume of red plums, strawberries, menthol, and exotic flowers. This carries to a medium-bodied, elegant 2021 offering fine tannins, a forward, incredibly satisfying, charming style, and outstanding length on the finish. The floral, exotic edge here actually has a touch of Rayas-like character, and this is impressive. I'd be a buyer.

The 2021 Gigondas La Cuvée Ventabren is laced with delicate orange peel, raspberry, strawberry and red cherry fruit. Hints of dried herbs and licorice add more contrast. Elegant and inviting, a gently tannic structure and sufficient acidity hold everything together. This 2021 is a fine Gigondas worth seeking out. (NG)

Notes

The Cuvée Ventabren is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault from the property’s oldest vines, ranging from 80 to 100 years of age. All fermentation is done in cement tanks and the wine is aged for 18 months in large oak foudres. The wine is loaded with brambly black fruit, spice notes and that ever-present garrigue. Possessing a beautiful full body texture and an ample finish, this wine resonates beautifully and has all the hallmarks of a great southern Rhône wine. It is approachable now but has plenty of stuffing for short-term or long term cellaring. Serve it with roast meats, braises and stews. You’ll see why we keep coming back for JB’s wines.
