Reviewed December 2023The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Tanbark Hill Vineyard is one of the most potent vintages of this wine I can remember tasting. Dense and textured, the 2021 shows ample dark fruit and complex earthy/savory undertones that add balance. The 2021 benefits from the addition of some excess fruit that would have been used in the main label but that, for practical purposes, ended up in the tanks for the Tanbark Hill. Readers will find a wine of breadth, power and character. In this vintage, the Tanbark Hill gives a very good idea of the quality and style of the Grand Vin. (AG)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2021 Tanbark Hill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon skips out of the glass with bright, cheery scents of black raspberries, redcurrants, and cassis leading to hints of pencil lead, menthol, and mossy tree bark. The medium-bodied palate is soft and refreshing, with bags of energetic red and black berry layers, finishing with a savory lift. "This comes from a certain patch in the vineyard where we're not thrilled about the drainage," said Lisa Togno. "This is about 99% Cabernet Sauvignon, about a third of our production, and less than half the price of our flagship. We came up with this about the same time as Leoville Las Cases started producing Clos du Marquis." (LPB)
