2016 Château de Nalys (E. Guigal) ''Saintes Pierres de Nalys'' Chateauneuf-du-Pape

James Suckling
Review Date: 07/2019This has very concentrated fruit presence with an excellent sense of purity and focus. Aromas of rich, dark berries define the nose. Long, rich palate with a striking, layered, spicy impression. Ripe dark plums and chocolate to close. Drink or hold.

The "second wine" of Nalys, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Saintes Pierres is a blend of 69% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 5% Cinsault, 4% Muscardin, and 1% each Counoise and Mourvèdre. It was put together by the Guigal team, although the vinifications took place prior to the acquisition. It's an attractive, full-bodied wine that delivers ripe cherries, a hint of stone fruit and very supple tannins. It's a bit too easy to think it will be a long-term cellar candidate, but it's a ripe, juicy mouthful of fruit... (JC)

Glistening ruby-red. Vibrant black raspberry, cherry pit, potpourri and garrigue aromas pick up a bright, smoky mineral nuance with air. Concentrated red and dark berry and floral pastille flavors are given spicy lift by a suggestion of white pepper. Fine-grained tannins sneak in slowly to add shape and grip to an impressively long, vibrant, floral-driven finish that leaves behind a sweet suggestion of Chambord. 90% stainless steel and 10% oak foudres. Moving to the reds, the entry-level cuvée is the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Saintes Pierres de Nalys, a juicy, enjoyable red that offers lots of darker fruits, garrigue, spice, and hints of flowers. It’s charming, short, and ready to go.
