James Suckling
Review Date: 08/2021The 2019 Syrah Originals offers a more cool-climate vibe in its peppery herbs, gamey meat, flowers, and black olive-driven aromatics. Notes
From Stolpman's original block of Syrah vines planted in 1993. The first Syrah in Ballard Canyon, and the planting that essentially gave birth to the Ballard Canyon AVA. The clonal material is a massal field selection from Durell Vineyard in Sonoma. These vines are planted in very sandy soils over limestone bedrock. The grapes were fermented using native yeast, 33% whole-cluster, in open top concrete tanks. The fermenting juice was gently pumped over 3 times per day. The wine was aged for 19 months in large format 500L Ermitage French oak puncheons.
