1988 Piper-Heidsieck "Cuvée Rare" Brut Champagne
95
Wine Spectator
Review Date: 12/2010A rich and delicious Champagne, with beautiful balance and a fine-grained texture on the palate supporting grilled almond and iodine overtones. Latent layers of mushroom, smoke, candied citrus peel and brioche flavors add complexity, while fresh, salty acidity enlivens the wine, leading to a mouthwatering finish. (AN)

Made with 65% Pinot Noir, 35% Char-donnay, the Rare's pedigree is flawless—all the grapes are from grand cru villages. It's medium-bodied and quite dry, with lots of acidity to keep it young and lively.

Deep, slightly orange gold. Chef de Cave Régis Camus thinks it smells like the library at Trinity College, Dublin, old cigar ashes, cognac dregs, etc. A bit rich but not decayed and with excellent tension. Long and racy. (JR)
