TOP QUALITY PRODUCER As expected with Montée de Tonnerre, there are great reserves of power and energy here. Concentrated, fine and with great purity, oak adds subtle extra dimensions in the background. Lovely acidity and a touch of spice to finish. Great class. Raveneau's Montée de Tonnerre is over 3ha in area, accounting for around 1/3 of the estates holdings. Around 1.8ha are located on the mid-slopes of Chapelot. with 1.2ha at higher altitude in Pied d'Aloup which adds additional freshness and vivacity.

There is an interesting minty hint to the wonderfully elegant and overtly floral-suffused aromas of citrus confit, shellfish and green apple. The almost painfully intense middleweight flavors possess strikingly good transparency on the borderline aggressively stony, focused and impressively long finish. I very much like the inherent sophistication as well as the overall sense of balance. In a word, stunning.

Isabelle Raveneau noted that the family is very lucky to have forty percent of their vineyard holdings in the Montée de Tonnerre, and she reflected that it is one of the nicest vineyards to work in during the summer, as there is actually a lovely view from their parcels here. The 2021Montée de Tonnerre from the Raveneau family is going to be a brilliant wine. It offers up a fine nose of pear, tangerine, beeswax, a complex base of chalky minerality, lemon zest, white lilies and just a hint of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full and properly reserved out of the blocks, with a great core, fine mineral drive and cut, zesty acids and lovely balance on the long, complex and focused finish. First class juice. (JG) 94+

Pale lemon colour, with an exquisite nose, floral and fresh fruit, less saline, with some apple behind. Again, I am quite impressed by the density achieved in this difficult vintage. A fine long aftertaste.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "Largest cuvée of the estate almost 3 ha – ‘Versus some areas, we suffered a bit less from the frost here’. Back to the slightly reductive minerality style of the earlier wines. This is direct, architecturally structured wine – very open – almost fluid. That’s one of the best MdT I’ve tasted here – it’s usually a step back after the Butteaux – for my taste – but not in 2021 – bravo!" (06/2022)
