The 2023 Suduiraut is a model of modern Sauternes. Orange peel, burnt sugar, crème-brûlée, tangerine peel, and wild flowers inform a Sauternes of total finesse and silkiness. Yields were a measly 12 hectoliters per hectare. The 150 grams of residual sugar are not especially evident. Everything about the 2023 is perfectly judged. It can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring or cellared for decades. The 2023 is a timeless wine that is among the most notable successes of the year. (AG)

This is 100% Semillon, and it was picked at a yield of 12 hl/ha, from September 17th onwards. Aromatically it carries one of the defining features of this vintage, a very fresh and bright saline freshness, here intertwined with chamomile, white peach, white freesia and crushed white pebbles. It is certainly very different to the 2021 and 2022 vintages! The palate is fresh and bright, with layers of white peach, pressed lemon, crushed pebbles, herbal tea, white freesia and salted citrus, with superb veins of minerals and acids, set within a delicious and tangible substance. Brilliantly bright and fresh, with incisive acidity, this is another superb expression of the Suduiraut vineyard. Delicious, and so long, and so thoroughly charged with energy. A stunner, which I was fortunate enough to taste twice, and I savoured every drop.

Medium gold-hued, the 2023 Château Suduiraut has absolutely riveting aromatics of honeyed orange, caramelized citrus, baking spice, and brioche. It's rich, full-bodied, pure, and ultra-seamless on the palate, with a deep, layered mouthfeel and incredible length. Based on 100% Sémillon and aged 20 months in 50% new French oak, it's heavenly stuff that will have 50-75 years of longevity. Drink 2026-2100.

Pale lemon-gold in color, the 2023 Suduiraut storms out of the glass with a powerful perfume of pineapple upside-down cake, mango pudding, passion fruit, and orange blossoms, leading to hints of lemon verbena, candied ginger, and crème caramel. The palate is rich and opulent with a crisp backbone and a fabulous array of exotic spice-laced tropical fruits, finishing with savory gravitas. Stunning. This is 100% Sémillon, with a pH of 3.80 and 150 g/l of residual sugar. (LPB)

When Suduiraut is at the top of their game, they easily rival the very best in Sauternes. That’s been happening a lot recently, with one spellbinding release after another. Is it the case with the 2023? The professional critics certainly seem to think so, with a 100-point score from Vinous to go along with best-in-class marks from nearly everyone else. And when you consider that acclaim alongside the going rate for Suduiraut, it quickly becomes one of the best buys in fine wine.
I think this may be their best wine since the simply stunning 2015 (with the impossible-to-find 2021 in the conversation as well!). Like the best of the 2023s, Suduiraut hits that magical combination of richness and brightness—luxurious yet refreshing. Gorgeous aromatics layer stone fruit, citrus peel, and orange blossom, while the palate delivers grilled pineapple, blood orange, honey, key lime, and a thread of spice. But it’s the balance and texture that really steal the show—just the right amount of everything. Add the fact that it promises an effortlessly long, broad drinking window, and you won’t have to wait too long to get the best from the 2023 Suduiraut. For Sauternes royalty at a song, I can’t recommend this one enough. How lucky are we to be able to pull the cork on a wine this good without having to think twice?!
