This wonderfully priced Girvan straddles the line on the age front - is it young or old? The wild Girvan facility is one of the few plants in Scotland I've never been invited in, but the facility is legendary. Getting a taste for single grain whisky is just a matter of finding a good one and for many people I think this extremely inviting Girvan is the ticket. Usually with refill hoggy we expect something the color of white wine, but not in this case it shows a beautiful deep gold hue (0.8). The nose is much more active and vibrant than many other single grains at this age offering a huge coconut note, hints of almond husk, tangerine peel, and sweet tart candies. On the palate its full bodied and surprisingly complex with gorgeous yellow fruit (persimmon and yellow plum), perfect earthy mid-palate spice and long creamy finish. It's much rounder and sweeter than most grain whiskies and has a beautiful integrated oak. While this doesn't scratch the malt or the bourbon itch, you'll find this one might impart a completely new thing to scratch. A lovely cask that defies the marketplace in terms of price and quality in every regard.

Notes

The Girvan Distillery is on one of the world's largest alcohol producing facilities in the world. On the southern coast of Ayrshire, just north of the eponymous town, this facility is enormous and has a capacity to produce nearly 115 million liters of pure alcohol per year. It's also the place where Hendrick's is made. The distillery was built in the 1960s during a dispute between owners William Grant & Sons and the largest conglomerate at the time DCL (the predecessor to modern day Diageo). Only 9 months between groundbreaking and first run make the construction a truly unprecedented endeavor. Despite the enormous size Girvan Single Grain can be exceptional. This nicely aged version captures its opulent style perfectly. Filled to a beautiful old hogshead in November of 2002, it was bottled in March of 2024 and full cask strength with no coloring or chillfiltration whatsoever at 61.7% abv. The style is big, and barley driven with sweet cream, barley tea, creme brulee and hints of citrus zest. Round and syrupy on the palate, the confectionary character is on full display - flap jacks and maple syrup. Hints of vanilla and gentle roasted oak character to balance the sweet cereal character. The upfront sweetness is met contrasting flavors to add depth - candied ginger, fresh citrus pulp, and soft baking spices. A surprisingly complex style albeit in a very friendly package.
