Dailuaine is a distillery we've been preaching about for some time now, but without Diageo's help it seems no one seemed to notice until recently. Nowadays we have people regularly asking for Dailuaine despite the lack of distillery bottlings. That's thanks to the string of excellent and affordable Dailies we've put out of the years. The just absolutely deliver almost every time. This 1st fill sherry butt is no different and it represents one of the better, cleaner sherry values we've been able to put together in many years. It's so drinkable and delicious with a characterful sherry influence, yet still has the pristine distillery character in spades. Let's have at it. The color is burnished (1.1). The nose is perfect with exceptional dried stone fruit and roasted nuts just jumping out of the glass. Behind that a multilayered bevy of aromas push through the rich character of the sherry. Expect tense fresh exotic wood (sandalwood & cedar), hints of smoky frankincense, dried mint, almond butter, burnt orange peel and heather. On the palate the sweetness is surprising considering the complex woody savory notes on the nose, but the herbal earthy character stands up well to it. Apricot candies, roasted nuts, caramel candies, bitter barks, sweetened black tea, old leather and chocolate covered golden raisins. This is absolutely delicious. It's clean yet super complex sherry. Truly over delivering here and approachable enough that nearly any drinker will appreciate it quality, but not run of the mill in any way. The Dailey always delivers. No exceptions here.

Notes

Here is your dark sherry bomb for the season! While it's not coffee dark, it's a gorgeous auburn/polished mahogany color. The simply lovely hue is a hint at the stupendous malt inside the bottle. The wonderful Dailuaine Distillery is finally garnering some notoriety with aficionadas and the wider popular in general. It's taken many years to pull this lesser-known distillery out of obscurity and put it on the pedestal it deserves and now that it's finally getting the recognition it deserves, maybe we wish we could hide it once again. This is officially the 11th cask of Dailuaine we've purchased, but the first 1st fill sherry butt we've managed to track down in many years. Distilled in November of 2008 and filled into a fresh sherry butt for 15 long years, this exceptional cask offers an ultra-rich and decadent nose of dense dried fruit, sweet nutty sherry, and intense oak spice. On the palate, the spice powers through the sherry on the opening, but quickly the sherry takes hold again. Tropical fruit cocktail, fresh chocolate fudge, creamy oloroso, and Ethiopian medium roast. The dark dried fruit takes over on the finish -raisins, dried plum, and apricots- with hints of cooling mint and more vibrant coffee. This is stupendous and while powerfully characterful it remains wonderfully balanced. There's no question that this will be many (maybe most) people's favorite this year. Bottled at a cask strength of 57% abv without coloring or chillfiltration exclusively for K&L.
