An impressively rich wine, this is a dense, spicy wine packed with black fruits. The wood aging for 12 months has polished the tannins and brightened the acidity. (RV)

It has been a couple of years since we first offered the 2022 Château du Perry, and it proved every bit as popular as the 2020 that preceded it. We sold through our original allocation, but recently had the opportunity to secure another small parcel of the 2022 vintage—and we were more than happy to bring it back. One look in the glass and you understand why Cahors was historically known for its “black wine.” Deep, dark and nearly opaque, it stains the glass and immediately hints at the concentration to come. The 2022 is a touch bigger than the 2020, with sumptuous flavors of black raspberry and currant layered with grilled meat and savory spices. It practically erupts from the glass. What we loved about this wine the first time around remains true today. It captures the depth and character that make Cahors distinctive, but in a style that is accessible, generous and ready to drink. This is a LOT of wine for under $15 and an easy recommendation for fans of Cabernet, Bordeaux and, of course, Argentine Malbec. We were thrilled to get another shot at the 2022, especially at this price. Quantities are limited, and this may well be our last opportunity to feature this vintage.

While Argentina currently champions the Malbec varietal, it is no secret that Cahors France is it's true origin. Here it shows lighter, crunchy red fruits, savory dried herbs, black peppercorns, a touch of earth, and a long spicy finish. A great introduction to the category, as it demonstrates the characteristics of Malbec from Cahors, while being a delicious, crowd-pleasing wine, at an entry level price point.

Notes

Vigneron Hervé Joyaux Fabre began his career as a Bordeaux merchant but the wines of Argentina began to gain his attention. Falling in love with the category, he purchased his winery in Mendoza and created in Fabre Montmayou in 1992. Gaining much success there it was not until 2015 when Fabre turned his sight back to the birthplace of Malbec, Cahors. Impressed with the diverse terroirs that Cahors had, he gathered a group of investors together and formed Les Vignobles St Didier Parnac. The Château du Perry is part of that group and has holdings on both the clay-limestone hillsides and the alluvial terraces just above the Lot River. The wine is made from 100% Malbec that is aged in large oak barrel for 12 months before transferring to concrete tanks to rest before bottling. The wine is rich and concentrated with flavors of dried plum and red berries. This is a great Malbec for now but has plenty of structure to develop for a few more years.
