The 2021 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru, the first Grand Cru to be picked with 50% whole clusters, has a fragrant, pure and (unlike Latricières) inviting bouquet that just wants to seduce. Very sensual. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins that frame the crystalline red fruit, supreme mineralité with one of the most elegant finishes you will find in this vintage. Reminiscent of Dugat's Chapelle-Chambertin, this is divine.

60% whole bunch vinification. A fine if slightly less deep purple. A very fine, fruit laden yet precise bouquet. Alpine strawberries, always a good sign for me. Very long finish here yet the sensuality of the fruit, now with cherries, comes out even more. Really long and exceptionally stylish. Drink from 2028-2038.

The 2021 Chapelle-Chambertin from the Trapet family was a bit more reserved on the palate at the time of my visit than any of the other wines in the roster. The bouquet was still very expressive, offering up scents of black cherries, dark berries, pigeon, a complex base of dark soil tones, cigar wrapper, raw cocoa, vanillin oak and just a touch of whole clusters in the upper register. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and rock solid at the core, with firm, fine-grained tannins, excellent soil signature and grip and a long, well-balanced and vibrant finish. This is going to be outstanding as well, but it was still a bit hunkered down at the time of my visit. (Drink between 2036-2100)

The 2021 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is also very attractive, wafting from the glass with aromas of dark berries, licorice, rich spices, orange zest, roses and baking chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, it's deep and textural, with an ample core of fruit that largely conceals its ripe strutting tannins. (WK)
