Review Date: 12/2022Picked 28th September. A rich, indeed sumptuous purple. Exceptionally youthful bouquet with a little touch of new wood. A magical wine, which is entirely in balance. It is not just the concentration which moves to another level but the sublime and effortless suavity of texture. All in pure red fruit, nothing dark, my favourite alpine strawberries, but a host of other berries as well. Magical. Drink from 2030-2040.

The 2021 Chambertin Grand Cru includes 60% whole clusters. This has a typically regal bouquet with a mixture of red and black fruit, loam, crushed stone and spicebox. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, wonderful depth, great intensity and vibrancy with a long and persistent finish. This simply builds and builds unlike the Chapelle-Chambertin, a magnificent 2021. (NM)

The Trapet family’s 2021 version of Chambertin is a stunning young wine. It is deep and structured and is going to take plenty of time to reach its plateau of maturity, but it will end up being one of the top wines crafted in this excellent vintage. The nose delivers a superb blend of cassis, black cherries, black plums, grilled meats, a marvelously complex base of soil, coffee bean, woodsmoke, cedary oak and a touch of currant leaf in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and shows off stunning depth at the core, with a beautiful foundation of soil complexity, ripe, seamless tannins and stunning length on the perfectly balanced finish. All this great, great wine needs is time in the bottle to soften up and properly blossom! (Drink between 2040-2100)

As always, the Trapet Chambertin is among the reference standards for the appellation. The wine has a surprisingly deep ruby hue and abundant aromas of ripe blackberry and pomegranate with notes of earth, wild herbs, and flowers. Oak spice still marks the nose but should integrate with time. Both new wood and whole cluster inclusion was reduced this year, and the restraint suits the wine well, and the purity of the fruit shines like a beacon. Marvelous. (CC)
