The Trapet family’s forty-two ares of vines in En Ergot were planted in the 1960s. The wine is excellent in its debut vintage of 2021, delivering a refined and black fruity bouquet of black cherries, sweet dark berries, coffee bean, a superb base of dark soil tones, woodsmoke, just a touch of stems and a deft foundation of new oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused, pure and shows off lovely depth at the core, with good soil inflection, lovely complexity and grip, suave tannins and lovely lift on the long and seamlessly balanced finish. First class juice and a lovely new addition to the domaine’s roster! (Drink between 2032-2085)

One of the Trapet family's historic holdings, the 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru En Ergot derives from a parcel acquired in the 1880s (during the phylloxera crisis, it sold for the lofty sum of 400 Francs per barrel) that's the continuation of premier cru Petite Chapelle but with deeper soils. Revealing aromas of cassis, sweet plums, orange zest and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a textural, gourmand profile and powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish. The first separate bottling for En Ergot! A concentrated fresh purple. A very light reduction. There is less of an underlying limestone slab here than in neighbouring Petite Chapelle, or even more so Chapelle-Chambertin, though the topsoil is very similar to Petite Chapelle. Quite a linear style and very peppery behind. Still extremely young and showing rough edges especially on the tannins. There is plenty of fruit though. Five barrels made, and will stay in wood until March. Drink from 2026-2032.

The maiden 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Ergot 1er Cru comes from a parcel in the center of Petite Chapelle that has no limestone unlike the rest. It has a light and transparent nose with red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins, fine acidity, mineral-driven and stony towards its uncompromising paradoxically calcaire finish. Give it 2-3 years in bottle. (NM)
