The Wine Independent

Pale to medium garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Melange Rouge has a profound nose of red and black cherries, violets, and dark chocolate with underlying licorice, Sichuan pepper, smoked meats, and tar. The medium to full-bodied palate is lively and vibrant - pop-rocks in your mouth - with lots of texture interest combining plush and chewy, and bright and lifted fruit leading to a peppery finish. The blend is 54% Syrah, 25% Grenache, 9% Graciano, 6% Petite Sirah, and 6% Viognier. The wine was fermented with 40% whole clusters, mainly on the Syrah, and spent 21 months in barrel, 35% new. 95+ (LPB)

Savory charred meat and charcuterie aromas are dusted in pepper, sprinkled in soy and layered across roasted red plums on the nose of this bottling. It's a rugged wine on the palate in a pleasant manner, offering notes of roasted meat, rich berry and cumin. (MK)

This wine simply blew me away! What a stunning, complex, layered wine expertly composed from some of the finest vineyards across the Central Coast. Winemaker Benny Holland's time in the hallowed cellars of Sine Qua Non are in full evidence right here! A simply spellbinding combination of luxurious fruit but with so much savory complexity and textural finesse, too. A Syrah-Grenache dominant blend sourced from the crème de la crème of vineyards across the region. Everything is done in micro-lots, parcel by parcel, small individual ferments in Walson Holland's boutique winery in Ojai. After a long elevage in top notch French oak cooperage, the blend is painstakingly assembled from the vast array of individual components. The seamless synthesis of flavors here is astounding. Deep, smoky black fruits, blackberry, plum, brambly elements, charcoal, dusty cocoa powder, new leather, dried herbs and wild chaparral. Underneath the luxurious dark fruits are savory, gamey, smoked meat elements, cracked peppercorn and bacon fat. Each time I come back to the glass something new leaps out at me. A simply fascinating wine that is unique and compelling. We got a great deal on the last cases of this vintage and are offering this to our Insider's Advantage customers at a sizable discount from the wine's typical SRP. If you've never experienced Walson Holland's tiny production wines, there's never been a better time to do so!

This Rhone blend, showcases developed flavors of black peppercorn, pastrami, paprika, leather, mocha dust, ripe plums, dark cherries, ash, and iodine salinity on the nice spicy finish. On the palate, the Viognier lends a floral touch, while the Graciano gives it a savory dried herb component. A new flavor is revealed at every sip. Hard to put down on it's own, but would be sublime with barbeque or ribs. Enjoy!

Notes

A Rhone inspired blend of 54% Syrah 25% Grenache, 9% Graciano, 6% Petite Sirah, and 6% Viognier.
