The wines of Fattoria le Pupille have always been a go-to for me. The Saffredi over-delivers with a unique and compelling expression of Bordeaux varietals, but their Poggio Valente is a testament to high-quality Sangiovese that brings out the best in the varietal. A pure ruby color leads to aromas of strawberries, red flowers, and cedar, while the palate delivers mouthwatering red plums, sweet cherry, and a long, textured finish covered in fine, dusty tannins. There's a purity, accessibility, and freshness here that make it irresistible as a pop and pour, and an over-delivering Super Tuscan that far outperforms its price point. Poggio Valente is superb in 2020 - a can't-miss Tuscan red.
