Winemaker Matt Dees is considered one of the best winemakers anywhere, and this blend is ample reason to believe the hype. Intense, focused and dry but rich aromas of dark fruit, roasted wood, crushed rocks and wild herb enliven the nose, while the palate is weighty yet expertly tense. Flavors of dried red fruit, peppery spice and milk chocolate float into the finish. (MK)

The black berry character dominates here but there is plenty of crushed stones as well as orange peel. It’s full-bodied yet so refined and gorgeous. Subtle and complex flavors of fruit and dark earth. Creamy textured tannins.

The 2019 Todos checks in as its usual kitchen sink blend of 48% Syrah, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petite Sirah, 9% Merlot, 2% Sangiovese, and the rest assorted other varieties. This wine has been a perennial winner for over a decade now, and the 2019 reveals a dense purple hue as well as pure red and blue fruits followed by ample pepper, pen ink, graphite, and herbal nuances. I love its balance, it's medium to full-bodied, has a pure, elegant texture, and outstanding length.

The daring blend 'Todos' (meaning 'All') includes every variety grown on the estate. Still the wine manages to carry the distinctive character of the Syrah and Cabernet that cornerstone the wine. Brambly black and blueberry notes are wrapped with smoke and spice and earth, and with whiffs of violet and liquorice. The palate is coherent and focused, its lush, bright fruit—blackberry and plum—layered with exotic spices, crushed rock, and a hint of savoury salinity, all backed by the firm structure of the Cab. Every year this wine gives a great insight to the phenomenal wines of Jonata Estate (which just so happens to be the SoCal sister property to Screaming Eagle in Napa). The 2019 Todos is simply spectacular and truly gives the high-end bottling from Jonata a run for their money in every way. Built around a powerful, muscular core of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is masterfully composed to include at least a small amount of everything grown on the estate giving a truly panoramic expression of a given vintage. Jonata's Matt Dees is well know as one of the most talented winemakers of his generation with many 100-point wines to his name, and a plethora of the best vineyard sites across Santa Barbara County at his disposal. Jonata's estate in Ballard Canyon is incredible - intricate blocks of vines put down deep roots in the pure sand soils. The fruit from here is immensely concentrated and presents heightened aromatics and fine-grained tannins. The 19 Todos is redolent with woodsy spices, black raspberry, bramble fruit, charred meat with rubbing spices, some redcurrant paste, bay laurel, crushed rock mineral, subtle oak spices frame the complex mélange of spicy, brambly, smokey fruit. Reminiscent of something from the northern Rhone, but with a little more density and hints of singed cedar from the Cabernet. Such a fascinating and layered wine. I'm also certain this wine has 10+ years of positive development, and probably 20+ years of excellent drinking ahead of it. A very serious wine for a very modest price point.

Flavors of ripe dark berries, black plums, dark roasted coffee, fresh basil, toasted cedar, slightly savory, a touch of leather, cigar leaf, and charcoal on the long, juicy finish. An interesting blend, predominantly Syrah, that is starting to showcase some developed complexity now, but will age beautifully in the near future. "Todos" by Jonata in my opinion, is one of the quintessential red blends coming out of the Central Coast, from one of the most talented winemakers in the area.

The 2019 Jonata Ballard Canyon Red Blend sits purple and opaque in the glass, a dense and brooding ball of intensity. The nose doesn't lift from the glass so much as it pulls you in, relaying the full, muscular structure that awaits the palate. Charred cedar, charcoal, and earth wrap around grilled herbs, black pepper, and graphite while blackberry fruit provides a juicy, softening counterpoint. The wine is broadly structured and firm, just waiting to be paired with smoked brisket or well seared steak. This is serious wine with depth of complexity to match the density and richness it exhibits.
