2018 Gramercy Walla Walla Valley Syrah
94
Wine & Spirits
Review Date: 02/2023More approachable than many of Gramercy’s 2019s, its extra year of bottle gestation has given this wine a supple elegance. It’s mildly smoky, mildly spicy from whole clusters in the fermentation, the flavors of purple plum and mint and olive bearing a quiet hum of energy, held in check by fine, polished tannins. (PJC)

Int'l Wine Review
A blend of 99% Syrah and 1% Viognier from the Forgotten Hills, Les Collines, and Holy Roller vineyards that was fermented with 58% whole cluster and aged for 17 months in 6% new French oak. Starting off blue-fruited with blueberries and huckleberries exploding on the nose and on the palate, and then it moves to a more umami character with grilled game, pine forest breeze, and crushed peppercorn. Very balanced with silky smooth tannins and acidity. Drink now or over the next 6-8 years.

The 2018 Syrah Walla Walla is a beauty, giving up lots of red and black fruits as well as peppery stem notes. All Syrah from the Forgotten Hills, Les Collines, and Holy Roller vineyards, it’s lightly textured, beautifully balanced, and medium to full-bodied.

Black cherry and strawberry fruit aromas get a lot of support from bursts of back fat, violets and straw. This wine's smooth, luxurious texture is like curling up in satin sheets, with flavors of blackberries, lemons, thyme and sweet black tea as your bedmates. What a pleasurable wine. (MA)

Email AlexandreStack a pile of red masonry bricks in your backyard under the sun and let them bake in the solar intensity for a few decades - take a bundle of bok choy, toss it with sesame oil and slap it on a screaming hot charcoal grill - find a slab of mountain sandstone and gently crush it into tiny bits with 2,000lbs of goose feathers - this Syrah is a downright delight, a true feast of Pure Washington aromatics and savor. Deeply crunchy red fruits run up and down the glass, with intense mountain cherries dusted with smoked paprika, blackberries rinsed in violet eau de vie, and a surprisingly lifted tone of brûléed lemon. An incredibly well crafted cool climate Syrah, with a hyper-complex nose that offers new, confoundingly conceptual notes each time you visit, and a silken palate that feels luxurious yet wild at the same time. HUGE fan!

Email RyanThis is such a fun, bright, and energetic rendition of Syrah. Honestly, it took me by surprise in a very refreshing way. With brambly berries and red florals on the intense aromatics, it hits the palate with lively red plum, blackberry, and black pepper notes. All surrounded by mouthwatering acidity, it speaks to a cool climate and finessed Syrah. This is a charmer that's going to be difficult to keep from popping corks at our current one-time pricing.
