In 1968, Jay Heminway, a U.C. Berkeley sculpture teacher, was in the midst of the 1960s' Berkeley culture. Amidst free speech, anti-war protests, he joined friends like Alice Waters at Chez Panisse in a movement to appreciate farm to table cuisine. Heminway then moved to Napa Valley's Vaca Mountains, finding a challenging property in 1969. He discovered century-old Rancho Catacula vines and planted Zinfandel, naming the vineyard Green & Red after its soil.
