2012 Billecart-Salmon "Cuvée Elisabeth" Brut Rosé Champagne
96
Vinous
Review Date: 03/2024The 2012 Brut Rosé Cuvée Elizabeth Salmon offers up hints of red berry fruit, ginger, spice, rosewater, mint and crushed flowers. There is a feeling of classic austerity that runs through the 2012. I would prefer to cellar this for at least a few years, as it is quite reticent at this stage. Chalk, mint, white pepper and bright saline accents linger on the pointed finish. Dosage is 3.8 grams per liter. Disgorged: first trimester 2023. (AG)

Notes
What a bottle! The 2012 Elisabeth is composed of 55% Chardonnay, mostly from the grand cru's of Chouilly, Avize and Mesnil and 45% Pinot Noir from Mareuil and Verzenay. The most interesting piece of this wine, and the limiting factor for production is the red wine. It is sourced exclusively from an over 80 year old parcel in Mareuil called the Valofroy, adjacent to the Clos des Goisses. This is what gives this wine its incredible, savory, black cherry power, a power that is balanced by the extraordinary elegance of the primarily chardonnay base. The 2012 is a great vintage, and this is one of the last tête de cuvée releases from this memorable harvest. -Gary Westby
