Fine pure lemon yellow. The bouquet starts off rather reserved. A suggestion of immense weight, certainly some new oak, but waiting for the fruit and the personality of the wine to emerge. Now some coconut and the feeling that the wine is about to release its magic. Superbly suave on the palate, more lifted than I expected and still the main core of the wine does not want to be touched. A fine mineral acidity at the finish but still wait and see. Only right at the end does it all start to kick in. A wine of immense density for the very long-term future. Retasting the glorious Cabotte reinforces the majesty of this Montrachet. Drink from 2034-2045+.

The 2022 Bouchard Montrachet is slightly reserved but has an immense presence on the palate, with a ripe apple and quince fruit, hints of white flowers, chalk, and exotic tangerine peel. The wine has enormous extract but all of the freshness necessary for balance as well – this is a superb expression of finesse and power at the same time. The grapes are from the domaine's 0.89 hectares on the Puligny side; they are lightly crushed and gently pressed, and only the finest must is fermented in cask before ageing over two winters in cask (15% new). This wine is a towering achievement.(CC)

Built on a grand scale for the long term. Starts quite gently on the full-bodied palate, but it is a giant of concentration and structure. Lots of almond paste and candied lemon, but also wild herbs and chalk. And somehow all this manages to retain a grace and subtlety that makes it hard to resist. From organically grown grapes. From a 0.89 hectare plot in this world-famous site. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

This is a substantially chalky and mineral Montrachet with a distinctly Puligny-ian flair and elegance. The vanilla bean nuances are countered by crushed stone. The honey is met with zesty citrus. The peach fuzz meshes with savory spices. The harmony and integration are impressive, and the finish is non-stop. The magic is already in place, but give this at least five to 15 years to allow it to begin to develop its full potential.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "0.89ha bought in 1838, with only 4 (known) owners in centuries. Obviously larger, obviously another level of complexity – a sort of zen calm to this nose. Ultra direct, totally fluid. Concentrated without weight. Mineral and direct – but at the same time with such impressive width. And the finish is also haunting but with width. That’s a properly great one. Possibly the best that I’ve tasted this year!" (10/2023)
