The Champ Canet has not quite fallen clear yet. However, the bouquet is stunning! And keeps changing. The immediate fruit now adds a little toasty note, plus the additional depth and complexity of having been kept on more lees. The fruit ripened nicely, with a touch of honeysuckle but it is a minority component, with ripe citrus taking the lead. A fascinating, complex finish. Drink from 2028-2037.

Note: from an impressive 1.1 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines in Champ Canet proper though some of them were planted in 1938 at the same time as the Bienvenues. A slightly riper nose is composed of apple, pear compote, white peach, just sliced lemon and a plethora of floral elements. There is fine volume and borderline painful intensity to the beautifully textured and caressing yet seriously energetic larger-bodied flavors that flash impressive power on the bone-dry and strikingly long finish. This very tightly wound effort is excellent and highly recommended.*Burghound Sweet Spot Outstanding!*

This comes from a mix of vines between 36 to 65 years old. The wine is graciously giving with ample weight and extract yet balanced by green apple-like acidity. There is lots of peps and crunchy enjoyment here with an elegant leesiness and dried white flower intrigue, too.

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet is excellent, mingling aromas of lemon oil, citrus confit, white flowers, freshly baked bread and mandarin, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless palate that's concentrated and structured, concluding with a long, nutmeg-inflected finish. Benoît Riffault is pleased with his 2022s, and with reason, as it numbers among his finest vintages to date. His harvest dates were more or less the same as in 2020, which is to say, relatively speaking, a little earlier, and that translates to impeccable balance across the board. But what are the rudiments of winemaking at this address today? Hand-harvested fruit is pressed without crushing, the press cycle lasting around three and a half hours and performing "quite a few," which is to say more than 20, rotations. The must is sulfited at the end of the press and settled for 24 hours, but Riffault retains most of the lees, fermenting in wood with ambient yeasts. Larger formats, including foudres, now complement 228-liter Burgundian barrels. The wines are racked to tank in July-August before the new vintage, whereas the premiers and grands crus spend as much as six months on their lees before bottling. All of Sauzet's wines are bottled with high-quality unbleached and unwaxed natural cork.(WK)

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "A small but oh-so fine nose – that’s really lovely! Mineral, delicate yet strong at the same time – porcelain! Easy over the palate – almost calming – but not due to any deficiencies – it’s rather the strength of this wine. Perfumed, quite floral finishing and holding so well – Simply beautiful!" (01/2024)
