Seductive and engaging, the wine shows ripe cherry, bouquet garni, dried mushroom, cured meat and almond characters on the nose, followed by a concentrated palate offering plush texture backed by layers of fine-grained tannins, finishing impressively long and expansive. At its best: now to 2034.

Moderately light crimson with a red brick hue, even colour throughout. The bouquet is elegantly presented with enticing aromas of cherry and black raspberry, intermixing hibiscus and leading to an amalgam of spice and herbs. Medium-bodied, aromas of black cherry, raspberry and semi-dried plum entwined with hibiscus, liquorice, cinnamon, nutmeg, unfolding thyme and mineral, earthy elements. Silky tannins lightly coated the palate, supported by lacy acidity, showing depth and elegance. Along with herbs and spices, elevate and linger to a long, mesmerising closing. This graceful Pinot Noir is well-made with harmonious aromas and layers and an enticing lingering on a silky palate. Match with smoked duck and roasted lamb rack over the next 6-8 years. 14% alc

Of all our New Zealand Pinot Noirs, this is the one I am the most excited about. Founded by Roger Parkinson in 1988, Roger continues to hand craft every vintage of this exceptional Martinborough producer. But the “Lease Block” is easily their best Cuvee. From a 1.5 acre parcel situated in ground zero for Martinborough’s best wines, the Lease block is in a league of its own. Planted right on the Martinborough Terrace, the Lease block is surrounded by illustrious neighbors: Martinborough Vineyards to the South, Ata Rangi to the East, and Escarpment’s Te Rehua Vineyard to the north. If you were to average the US prices of each of those wines the results would be nearly $80 per bottle. From a fruit stand point, this makes Nga Waka’s “Lease Block” Pinot Noir an incredible value.

Notes

Nga Waka was founded in Martinborough more than 30 years ago and has since become a benchmark producer in the region. Longtime winemaker Roger Parkinson – whose first vintage at Nga Waka was in 1993 – retired in 2024, making 2022 one of his last vintages at the estate. A wetter than normal vintage in 2022 reduced crop size and required careful handling in the winery, though the region’s free-draining soils and a cool climate allowed classic Martinborough savory and slightly spicy character to shine through. The focus at Nga Waka is producing food-friendly wines with a restrained, elegant style that also have the potential to age gracefully. As a side note, the name “Nga Waka” comes from Nga Waka a Kupe (The Canoes of Kupe) which refers to the three hills that sit side by side like upturned canoes, forming a dramatic backdrop to Martinborough and its surrounding landscape. According to legend, these hills were created when the great Polynesian explorer Kupe’s three canoes were carried inland by a large earthquake, eventually coming to rest in the valley behind the town. Today, Nga Waka remains a family-owned winery, now operated by Jay Short and Peg Dupey. The estate includes seven small vineyards dotted around the village of Martinborough, primarily producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
