This is terrific; the captivating bouquet shows dark plum, sweet cherry, cedar, game and rich floral aromas, followed by a superbly weighted palate offering plush texture combined with delightfully melded tannins. Opulent and powerful, while remaining refined and sophisticated, making it hugely appealing. At its best: 2025 to 2037

Ripe, concentrated wine with cassis, blackberry, violet, dark chocolate and spicy oak underpinned with vibrant acidity. It's a wine with heft, obvious power and the ability to age gracefully.

Such a seductive smelling wine. Dark cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry coulis tones with hints of pressed wildflowers, shiitake broth, wild thyme, amaro, spice, distant tobacco and Chinese barbecue shop and a sinuous, schisty undercurrent. The nose seems deeper and gruntier than its stablemates but the palate fans out and opens up with fine, powdery grip, plenty of umami and savoury facets and a bright, sapid line of acidity. A beautifully made wine of great restraint and elegance.

A very structured pinot with blue fruit, flowers and slate with hints of graphite on the nose and palate. It’s full-bodied but tight and hemmed in. Very precise and focused for a really big pinot, but comes off agile and energetic. This will age well.

Bendigo is the warmest site that Valli sources fruit from. West-facing, it collects the warm afternoon sun, leading to Pinot Noir grapes with thicker skins. It is darker than its siblings in the glass, with juicier red and black fruit notes. The Pinot Noir from Bendigo also has an intriguing floral component, with underlying lilac and faint wisteria. Very approachable, thanks in part to the warmth of the 2022 vintage, the wine is braced by refreshing acidity. The concentration of fruit here is impressive and like the other wines from Valli, is matured in 25% new French oak, which frames the wine well. The Bendigo, like the Bannockburn, is the most New World in spirit, but also showcases the same crystalline-like purity of fruit.

Notes

Valli is the creation of New Zealand winemaker Grant Taylor, who founded the brand in 1998 in the Central Otago region with the ambition of crafting terroir-driven wines that express the individual sub-regions of the South Island. Taylor had previously worked in Napa and Oregon, but on a visit back home in the early 1990s realized the potential of Central Otago, the most southerly winegrowing region in New Zealand. At the time, vineyards were just being established, but no one was exploring the individual sub-regions and bottling them separately, in a Burgundy-like model. Focusing primarily on Pinot Noir, today Valli sources fruit from its own vineyards in Gibbston, Bannockburn and Bendigo in Central Otago (Central Otago) as well as the emerging Waitaki Valley region in North Otago. What sets Valli apart is its commitment to showcasing the specific terroir of each site: rows are planted densely, yields are kept low and winemaking is gentle, almost hands-off, allowing each wine to reflect the vineyard and vintage. Valli does not make an “entry level” wine, nor do they make any sort of reserve bottling, instead staying true to their original mission of showcasing site above all else. Each wine in their lineup is remarkably different: Bendigo is the warmest sub-region and the berries have the thickest skins, creating more opulently fruited wines with floral undertones.
