Aromas of blood plums, violets, licorice, spices and dried herbs. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with a generous mouthfeel framed by finely extracted tannins and bright acidity. There’s tension to the wine and persistent purity of fruit in the finish. California's nod to the northern Rhone at the highest level. 100% whole-cluster fermentation. Drink or hold.

The 2021 Syrah Estate has detailed aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry, green olive, white pepper, lilac and savory undertones. The full-bodied palate features layered flavors ranging from dark fruit to coffee and spice. It’s structured by powdery tannins and bright acidity and has a long, polished finish. (EB) 95+

Inky black, the 2021 Syrah Estate is resinous with pine sap, toasted black pepper oils, and black plum. Full-bodied, with gripping structure and good acidity throughout, it has an earthy profile of turned soil, black tea, and cherry pit. Offering a fresh lift of acidity, there seems to be a lot of potential here. Give it another 6-12 months in bottle, and this should be in a great place. (AF)

The 2021 Syrah is just as impressive from bottle is it was in barrel. A rush of dark plum, pomegranate and blood orange fruit saturates the palate. Strong savory and floral inflections follow, all supported by beams of tannin that give the wine its shape. Floral overtones reappear on the finish, adding brightness. This site at 2,500 feet in elevation consistently turns out super-distinctive wines. Give this a bit of time. (AG)

Today we have an incredible offer on one of the most spectacular and singular Syrah's in California. We have long been fans of Halcon here at K&L and this incredible estate is now taking it to the next level under the ownership of Pax Mahle (Pax Wines) and Baron Ziegler (Marine Layer Wines). The estate is located high in the remote and rugged Yorkville Highlands close to Anderson Valley in Mendocino. The vines grow at 2,500 ft elevation in extremely rocky soils of fractured schist and quartz. The nutrient depleted soils and wind exposure means the vines produce tiny yields of thick skinned grapes packed with intense flavor and concentration. Vinification is very low tech and traditional following traditions of the Northen Rhône Valley. Fruit is hand-picked, block by block, fermented using 100% whole-clusters and native yeast. The must is foot-trodden for gentle extraction. The wine is then matured in a mixture of new and seasoned French oak. Right from the first sniff this is an intense wine. Big aromas of potpourri, forest berries, camphor, hints of leather and savory spice tones. Medium-plus bodied with inky concentration and a plush mid-palate of fine but mouth-coating tannins. Fragrant and perfumed, but dense and concentrated at the same time. Dark fruit, mountain chapparal, graphite, and red meat on hot cast iron. A powerful but nuanced wine really showing the special qualities of this world-class vineyard site. No one plants or buys a vineyard at 2,500 ft up a remote, rugged mountain because it's convenient, they do it because the have a conviction that the place can produce something truly special, and that something is plain to see here.
A wildly expressive Syrah that feels more Northern Rhône than California sunshine bomb. The aromatics leap from the glass with cracked pepper, smoked meat, black olive, and dark blue fruit, backed by a lifted floral edge that keeps everything vibrant. On the palate, the wine is intense but beautifully controlled, balancing savory depth with piercing acidity and rocky minerality from the rugged Yorkville Highlands site. There’s a feral, windswept quality here that makes the wine feel alive and constantly evolving in the glass. Serious Syrah with real character and far more complexity than the price suggests.

Notes

Halcon Estate is now owned by longtime friends and business partners Baron Ziegler and Pax Mahle. They continue the story of this unique vineyard site 2,500ft up in the Yorkville Highlands to make a singular expression of Syrah.
